The apocalypse hits while you're far away from home and your well stocked armory. Somehow you manage to survive long enough to break into someone's home and hole up for the night. A quick search reveals a small gun cabinet in the living room and as you pry open the doors, you cross your fingers and hope for....
One handgun. One rifle. Nothing exotic like some crazy sniper rifle or gold-plated Desert Eagle.
What do you pray it is?

Good thread! I'd love to hear the logic behind everyone's ideas too. There are a lot of prevailing opinions on the pros and cons of multiple different types/styles of weapons.

For a rifle, I'd like to find a Remington 700 with a nice scope, so I can observe things at a distance before I approach a new area. It's a .308, so ammunition should be pretty common in my area, with all of the hunters around here.
For a pistol, I'd like a .45 caliber. Preferably my favorite, the Glock 30.

There's a lot of talk about the awesomeness of a .22... but the reality is, the round can fail to penetrate the skull, especially the forehead.
Thoughts?

Personally, I think you have better results hitting a zombie on the head with a sack of potatoes, then with a .22 caliber round. I wrote a little about the .22 round here: http://www.adriansundeaddiary.com/forums/?page=post&id=95FC2DCA-48D3-474B-93B4-7785DD1007B7&fid=248FA815-4EEF-4D5A-A1DE-9984D64D79D6
I'd like at least a 9mm for zombie killing, but a .45 caliber would make me feel safer.

Colt 6520 Carbine. Glock 17 or 34. 6520 is lightweight, short enough, and its not super exotic. Id rather have A1 sights than the A2s, but I can live with it until I get back to my ACR, or my personal ARs. I love Glocks.
If that's asking for too much, an SKS, old Mauser, etc. I'm familiar with a few weapons platforms, lol. I don't really ever have to worry about finding a handgun. The only times I don't have it are places I can't carry it legally.
If I had a little more leeway... Nah, just a CCO, or ACOG, and a light for the 6520.

Hey now, I'm not lazy, its just that I'm... Okay, I'm sitting by the pool with a glass of lemonade.
Incidentally, I don't actually own a 6520, so here's a link to Colts site:

WHAT?! NEXT TO THE POOL??? I am super jealous. Where I am, it warms up to 60 for a day and then just drops overnight to 30 or less and starts snowing again. I am ready for this weather to end.
As for the topic, I would be happy with a 9mm pistol of any kind since it is a popular caliber, and hmm an AR-15 for a rifle if thats not too crazy. Only because I have used one before and you said a rifle, and because I dont own one, so it would be a good addition to what I own.

AR based rifles are easy to manipulate, good ones are generally reliable, and most are pretty damn accurate. The ACR is the only thing that's close, for me... But it doesn't interest me in any format other than the CQB variant at this time.
Since I doubt I'll find another SBR ACR in the wild... Realistically, the Colt Lightweight Sporter Carbine, or the aforementioned 6520, are what I'd be looking for.
Kalashnikov mags weigh too much when loaded when compared to USGI M4 mags, so there's another point for the AR...
Damn, I forgot about the M1 Carbine, too. I'd be happy with a carbine too. Probably more likely to find one, too.

I would like a Glock 17 - lightt weight, high capacity, 9mm is common, but I would really like a Ruger 14 - tactical in .223. It's rugged, accurate, not overly loud and can handle 5.56 in a pinch.
A decent cleaning kit would be nice and some good cotton shirts in the closet to match extra patches since we're there anyway.

For a rifle I would be more than content with a Mosin Nagant M44 with a bayonet like mine http://adriansundeaddiary.com/member/?page=photos&p=7EF3E871-8E19-44A1-82B1-9E770EA3C78B&cmd=full&id=FD5DEBA1-6270-4386-B7C1-EE280C5B0F72 and as for a handgun it would be a toss up of either a .357 magnum http://texaslynn.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/gun-357-magnum.jpg or a glock 21 SF http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/images/D11/42/42294.jpg

I would hope that the handgun is a Glock 17 with at least three 17 round magazines fully loaded. For the rifle I would hope the owner was a bit of a gun nut and owned a nice AR15 preferably an M4orgery of some type also with at least three 30 round mags. It's what I am most familiar with and I know it's effectiveness. And while the forehead is not easy to punch through with any caliber in my humble opinon, a .22 will work just fine if you shoot through the face, especially from the tip of the nose to the eyes. A shot like that will turn off the Z motherboard 99.9% of the time.

Normally, I only carry a G19 with 4-15 round mags and 2-33 round mags in my bag. For long trips, a seperated AR-15 usually sits somewhere with 8-30 round mags. I've thought really hard about getting a Keltec Sub 2000 rifle with the G19 magwell. Only problem, everyone seems to want one and don't see them for sell much. They fold up nice and easy to put in a pack. The G17 mag ones are pretty easy to find though.
If warnings given and have to go out, it'll be a full loadout for the AR-15. 9-30 round mags and 2-BetaC's in dump pouches.
This one :D

Nice gun, great ACOG, I've got a similar set up that goes with me everywhere. I carry a G26 just about 24/7. I love the versatility of the Glock 9mm line. I think for Z day that would be 'the' set up to go with...AR/Glock 9 in whatever flavor you like!
